Monasterium Laboratory Skin & Hair Research Solutions GmbH (ML) was founded in 2015 by Professor Ralf Paus, MD, FRSB, a physician-scientist trained in dermatology, who specializes in skin and hair follicle biology and hair diseases, skin neuroendocrinology, wound healing and adult stem cells in human skin, with over 500 publications in internationally recognized scientific journals.
ML’s trademark pre-clinical research philosophy is to operate as much as possible with intact human hair follicles and skin, which are then exposed to test agents ex vivo (organ culture) or in vivo (i.e. in human skin xenotransplants on SCID mice). This generates pre-clinical data that predict the clinical response of human skin/hair follicles better than any other test system.
These predictions can then be directly probed in human skin in vivo, namely in ML's new Clinical Hair Trial Unit.
ML also develops custom-designed pre-clinical research assays in skin/hair physiology and pathology for consumer product and pharmaceutical companies as well as for academic partners.
ML also runs its own translational research program, with emphasis on developing innovative preclinical research models and on identifying novel targets for therapeutic intervention.
Academically, ML closely collaborates, e.g., with the Dept. of Dermatology, University of Münster, the Centre for Dermatology Research, University of Manchester, Manchester, UK, Italian Institute of Technology, Genova, and Technion Israel Institute, Haifa. ML is supported in its activities by a worldwide network of senior advisors (see Advisory Board).
ML is privately owned and independent of any major player in the industry that targets skin/hair, and is committed to both, complete confidentiality in executing the contract and collaboration research projects it runs with each of its partners, and to creating basic, but translational research at the forefront of investigative dermatology.
